Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine. The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales (Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood) in a story about a childless Baker and his wife who embark on a quest to reverse a Witch’s curse on their family by journeying into the woods. Along the way they explore the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. Their stories become entangled in unexpected ways and find that getting what you wish for doesn’t always end happily ever after.
